Mourinho backs Beckham Milan bid

Jose Mourinho has urged David Beckham to do everything in his power to stay with AC Milan rather than return to American side LA Galaxy.

Speaking ahead of Sunday's Milan derby, the outspoken Inter coach said: "Beckham is a great champion and I've no doubt he should remain at Milan.

"He's improved Milan since he's been there, which I knew he would do.

"He's a top professional in great condition, he's motivated and has adapted quickly to the Italian game."

Beckham, 33, is still hopeful that he can remain in Serie A despite Galaxy's insistence that he returns to Major League Soccer once his loan deal runs out on 8 March.

The Americans claim Milan have failed to come up with big enough offer for the midfielder and say the Italian giants have missed their chance to sign him.

Beckham, who equalled Bobby Moore's record of 108 outfield England caps in the midweek friendly against Spain, is likely to start for AC Milan on Sunday in a match Mourinho believes will offer few chances for either side.

"We have to take advantage of every opportunity we get because the derby is always very close and it's not easy to create four, five, six or seven goalscoring chances," said the Portuguese boss.

"In September's match [a 1-0 victory for AC Milan] we had two great chances but we didn't take them. On Sunday we will have to.

"The level of effectiveness in games such as this needs to be very high while on the other hand a team that has defended very well, as we did last time, can't afford to make a mistake in defence.

"I think it will be a match that requires exceptional concentration in defence, a lot of attention to every detail, because those are what make the difference."
